Burkina Faso Decoded 22-28 January 2026

Days after Togo extradited former junta leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, President Ibrahim Traoré moved fast. He dismantled what remained of his predecessor’s networks. Officers were recalled from postings abroad. Some were placed under surveillance. Others were disarmed. The purge targeted suspected Damiba loyalists and also promoted younger officers trained at the junta’s new military leadership college.

Burkina Faso Decoded 15-21 January 2026

On 16 January, security agents arrived at Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba’s residence in Lomé. They handed the former Burkinabè president a black suitcase with his belongings and escorted him before a tribunal. Then they put him on a plane to Ouagadougou. Before departure, he told his wife: “Be strong.”

Burkina Faso Decoded 8-14 January 2026

Adjutant Mamadou Soré appeared on state television on 8 January 2026, confessing to a trip to Côte d’Ivoire with businessman Madi Sakandé to seek funding for a coup against President Ibrahim Traoré. They returned with a modest sum before Sakandé was arrested. Days later, Soré—subdued and alone—begged forgiveness from the president, his colleagues, and the nation.
