Somalia Decoded 21-27 JANUARY 2026
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro attended the World Economic Forum this week to secure international recognition for his country. While in Davos, Switzerland, Irro held a historic dinner with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on 21 January. Eric Trump, the U.S. president’s son, also attended.
Somalia Decoded 14-20 JANUARY 2026
Somalia’s federal government made its boldest move yet against Somaliland’s independence aspirations this week. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud travelled to Laas Aanood on 17 January to inaugurate the North Eastern State administration. He formally declared the region a full federal member state with equal constitutional standing. The visit placed Somalia’s president squarely in territory that Somaliland claims as its own.
Somalia Decoded 7-13 JANUARY 2026
Somalia just torched its relationship with the UAE. The breakdown escalated fast. On 8 January, Mogadishu banned all United Arab Emirates (UAE) military and cargo aircraft from Somali airspace after allegations surfaced that Abu Dhabi helped Yemen’s separatist leader Aidarous Al-Zoubaidi through Somali territory without authorization. The Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) launched an investigation to verify the claims, warning that any unauthorized operations would violate national sovereignty and laws.
